POLICE ARRAIGN THREE FOR ASSAULTING POLICEMEN

The police in Lagos State Command have arraigned three men at the Shomolu Magistrate’s Court for assaulting policemen and preventing them from carrying out their duties.
The men, Afees Ismaila, 29, Eddy Thomas, 40, and Wasiu Lateef, 40, were on Monday arraigned before the court on four counts of assault and obstruction of duties.
The suspects, said to be members of a notorious cult group in Somolu, had last Thursday allegedly attacked two policemen, Jacob Obande and Olugbenga Oloare, attached to the Pedro Police Division. It was said that the policemen responded to a distress call from a commercial motorcyclist whose bike was seized by a hoodlum at Somolu.
Obande and Oloare reportedly chased the suspect to Olabiran Street, where they were allegedly ambushed by a group of hoodlums comprising of about 12 men who were the hoodlum’s friends.
They allegedly pounced on the policemen, beat them up and attempted to disarm them. It was said the timely intervention of a fresh team of policemen from the Alade Division  saved the situation.
The charges read in part, “That you Afees Ismaila, Eddy Thomas, Wasiu Lateef and others at large on the 15th day of August 2013, about 1300hrs at Number 27 Olabiran Street, Shomolu, Lagos did inflict injuries on the following officers FNo. 432967, Cpl Jacob Obande; and FNo. 355965, Cpl Olugbenga Oloare, by hitting them with stones, plank, and other weapons, thereby committing an offence  punishable under Section 171 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”
The men pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N100,000 each. The case was adjourned to September 11 2013.
