The
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to the Lagos State Police
Command, Ikeja, on Saturday, arrested three men, who were hired to kill
one Veronica Okenido, a school proprietress.
The gang leader, Jude Ekpenisi, confessed that they were paid by an undisclosed person to assassinate the woman.
Jude, in his confession, alleged that they changed their mind because Okenido is a Christian.
“We had compassion on the woman and rejected the N150,000 we were
offered but asked the woman to pay us off with the same amount,” Jude
said.
The other members of the gang are his brothers, David and Philemon Uwadi.
Abba Kyari, who is a superintendent of Police and also the
officer-in-charge of SARS, said that after the matter was reported to
the command, his men swung into action and tracked down the gang leader
through his brother’s phone line.
“Jude was arrested after he was lured out by a promise of a
lucrative employment in a big church. A SARS operative posed as the
pastor,” Kyari said.”
“The third suspect reported at the SARS Scorpion Building by
himself, not knowing that Jude had been arrested in connection with the
assassination attempt they had abandoned because their victim was not
co-operating.”
Kyari, however, revealed that David was arrested when he came to SARS office to visit his brother.
Jude revealed that his house shares a fence with Okenido’s school
and that she knew him but had no idea that he was the one that planned
the assassination attempt.
